New Crytek Office

Everyone are unique, I know. But that just doesn’t make for a fun post. Therefore, stereotypes will be used heavily.

Today our company Crytek moved to a new, more central office in Frankfurt. The old office was located next to a ginormous chemical plant. Sometimes it exploded, but we got emails assuring everything’s under control. Just don’t leave the building for a while, and for the love of god - keep the windows closed! Those calming words don’t explain my new profound way of glowing in the dark though. I shrug and I’m thankful.

Frankfurt is a banker city, really. The other floors in the new building are occupied by people in sharp, expensive suits. I’d have to think they’re slightly displeased with their new every day situation:

  • They wear suits. We wear trashed jeans and mustard-stained wife beaters.
  • They have business phones. We have PlayStation Portables.
  • They go into a meeting and discuss multi-million-dollar business decisions. We go into a meeting and discuss whether the hero in our game should be able to shoot sticky web out of his hands or not.
  • They meet potential business partners. We chase each other down the hallway with replica weapons while singing the lyrical masterpiece “trololololo lololo lololo”.

One of my colleagues tried to figure out how to use the elevator. A tie-equipped cell phone-wielding man told him that he could also use the stairs. Thanks for the help, buddy!

Another colleague entered the building with a two-meter long plush boa constrictor wrapped around his neck. Chris, you’re awesome!

It’s like a kindergarten where the kitchen maid just snapped and stirred down cocaine in the morning oatmeal. Only to find out that cocaine still works even if you are unaware of the fact that you’ve taken it. One step further for science.

Having said all this, I feel a strong need to dignify my profession. Being a good game developer means a lot of focused hard work, staying à jour with technology and being able to innovate in pressed situations. One day I might actually write about this.

And as for the bankers - I bet they sometimes bike to work and loosen their ties.

All is well in Frankfurt.
